Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
