Donald Trump’s newest ultimatum to introduce an extra full import duty on products from China has been labeled a “classic case” of United States’ contradictory behavior, according to the China’s leadership.
A Commerce Ministry spokesperson further commented that China could enact its own unspecified “countermeasures” if the American leader follows through on his pledge, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a looming trade conflict.
Last Friday, Donald Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its regulations for exports of rare earth minerals, charging the Chinese leadership of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.
Additionally, he warned to pull out of a planned talks with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was arranged for a summit in Seoul later this month.
Trump’s comments on Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index closing down nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since April.
These statements renewed apprehensions of a trade conflict between the US and China.
This past spring, the respective governments had agreed to eliminate significant levies on each other’s products, which had led to concerns of commerce ceasing between the two countries.
Consequently, United States levies on Chinese imports incurring an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market incur a 10% tariff.
Beijing’s recent statements – published by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to media inquiries – reflected terminology from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.
The remarks condemned US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while justifying the country’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to protect state interests and that of every country.
The spokesperson remarked that for “many years”, the US had “overstretched the concept of state security, abused export control measures and “enforced” discriminatory practices against the Chinese nation.
“Turning to” trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to interact with China,” the official commented.
“China’s position on a trade conflict has always been unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”
Recently, China revealed it was tightening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and other materials essential to high-technology production.
This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state refines about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in products such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.
The recent comments from both governments are being interpreted by analysts as a strategy of strengthening positions in preparation for forthcoming discussions.
Remains uncertain whether a meeting between the former president and China’s leader, scheduled at a high-level meeting in South Korea in the coming weeks, will take place as planned.
